Engineering Disclaimer

Synnea is a tool for modelling systems, interfaces and redundancy on marine and offshore installations and for producing supporting analyses (including single-point-of-failure detection, worst-case-failure simulation and draft FMEA worksheets). This disclaimer explains the limits of those analyses. Read it together with our Terms of Service.

1. Decision-support only

Synnea's outputs are decision-support information to assist qualified engineers. They are not engineering advice, not a design, and not a certified analysis. They do not constitute, replace or discharge any obligation to perform a classification-society-approved Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), proving trials, annual DP trials, or any other survey, test or assessment required by a flag state, classification society, client or applicable regulation.

Synnea is not a classification society and does not approve, certify or verify any vessel, installation, system or design. Nothing produced by Synnea confers a class notation, statement of compliance or approval.

2. Analyses are candidates to verify, not verdicts

Findings such as single points of failure, cross-group connections, common-cause dependencies and worst-case-failure results are presented as candidates to be verified by competent engineers, by analysis and by physical testing. A clean result is not a guarantee of safety, fault tolerance or compliance; the absence of a finding does not mean the absence of a hazard.

  • The worst-case-failure simulation uses a simplified failure-propagation model and measures capacity by unit count, not by rated thrust or power. Real post-failure capability depends on ratings, environmental loads, protective functions, hidden failures and many factors Synnea does not model.
  • Redundancy, single-failure and common-cause checks reason only over what is recorded in the register; they cannot detect a hazard that has not been modelled.
  • Draft FMEA worksheets are starting points for an engineer to complete and validate — not finished FMEAs.
  • Any standard DP register generated by Synnea is an illustrative template, not the actual configuration of any vessel; it must be replaced with verified, as-built data.

3. Accuracy depends entirely on your data

Synnea's analyses are only as good as the information you enter. You are responsible for ensuring the register (systems, interfaces, criticality, redundancy groups, locations, equipment classes and all other data) is complete, accurate and current. Synnea does not independently verify the data and is not responsible for errors, omissions or outcomes arising from inaccurate, incomplete or out-of-date input.

4. No warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Synnea is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the analyses are correct, complete, reliable or suitable for any particular vessel, installation, operation or decision.

5. Your responsibility

Safety-critical decisions remain the sole responsibility of the user and their organisation. You must apply independent professional engineering judgment and follow all applicable rules, standards and class requirements. Do not rely on Synnea as the basis for any decision affecting safety of life, the environment, or the integrity of a vessel or installation without independent verification by appropriately qualified personnel.

6. Limitation of liability

Your use of Synnea's analyses is governed by the limitation-of-liability and indemnity provisions of our Terms of Service, which are incorporated here by reference. To the extent permitted by law, Synnea accepts no liability for any loss, damage, injury, pollution or cost arising from reliance on its outputs.
